FunFun Mahjong began at our family table.
Growing up, mahjong was more than a game in our home. It was tradition, culture, and connection. My mom filled our house with Chinese stories and superstitions, and mahjong was always part of it. I grew up hearing about my wàipó (外婆), my grandmother, and how brilliant she was at the game.
She faced significant adversity in her life. As a widowed mother without formal education, she met life’s challenges with quiet strength and resilience. At the table, it was not about background or circumstance.
It was about instinct, strategy, and presence. It was a place where she could stand out.
That idea stayed with me. The belief that mahjong is more than a game. It is a place of connection, confidence, and joy.
That same spirit is what inspired the name FunFun Mahjong.
My mom’s name is Fonfon (芳芳), but when she submitted paperwork to become a U.S. citizen, her handwriting was misread and her legal name became “Fun.” It ended up being perfect. She has always lived her life bringing joy to others, and that sense of joy is at the heart of everything I wanted this brand to represent.
Years later, when I rediscovered mahjong with friends, I fell in love with it all over again. I became part of a fun and welcoming community and started playing American mahjong regularly.
But when I brought those modern sets back to play with my mom, something felt missing. They did not translate. She could not understand them in the same way, and they did not carry the meaning or familiarity of the game I grew up with.
That moment shaped everything.
I wanted to create something that could bridge both worlds.
Tiles that feel fresh, joyful, and modern, while still honoring the traditional symbols and meaning that make the game so special.
So I created FunFun Mahjong.

Our Mission
FunFun Mahjong is deeply personal.
My mom, who is the inspiration behind this brand, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. That is why giving back is such an important part of what we do.
A portion of proceeds supports research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation, the world’s leading nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s research. Their work is focused on improving treatments and finding a cure.
